Pacific Honors Dr. Robert L. Boyd with the Dr. Frederick T. West Endowed Chair in Orthodontics

Dr. Robert Boyd is congratulated by Dean Arthur A. Dugoni and Dr. Stephen West, grandson of Dr. Frederick T. West.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – University of the Pacific named Dr. Robert L. Boyd as recipient of the Dr. Frederick T. West Endowed Chair in Orthodontics during Faculty Development Day on September 20, 2005. Boyd, professor and chair of the department of orthodontics, became the first named endowed chair in orthodontics at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry.

“I feel especially honored to receive this award from the West family who has done enormous work in orthodontics,” stated Boyd. “Although I didn’t have the honor to meet Fred West, I feel someway connected to him because his son, Eugene, was a major inspiration in my life and in my career in orthodontics. I owe a lot to him.”

The late Dr. Eugene West, a dental school alumnus, established the endowment in honor of his father Dr. Frederick T. West, a 1917 graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (forerunner to Pacific’s School of Dentistry). Dr. Frederick West was a nationally-prominent orthodontist and past president of the American Association of Orthodontists. He served as a member of the University’s Board of Regents for 20 years, acting dean for the School of Dentistry, faculty member for 63 years and president of the Alumni Association, and was one of five faculty members who pooled their resources together in 1923 to keep the College of Physicians and Surgeons from closing. The Dr. Eugene West gift to Pacific will be utilized to promote advanced scholarship, teaching, research and outreach in orthodontics for a five-year period, from 2005 through 2010.

Boyd, who holds certificates in both orthodontics and periodontics, is a renowned educator and researcher whose primary research interest involves quantifying potential damage to periodontal tissues during orthodontic treatment. While at Pacific, he pioneered a major research effort as the principal investigator for a longitudinal study of the orthodontic appliance, Invisalign. Boyd additionally served as co-investigator for a five-year study funded by the National Institutes of Health that determined the outcomes of orthodontic treatment.

With a career dedicated to education and research, Boyd has published more than 100 scientific articles, chapters and abstracts, as well as presented more than 375 continuing education courses and lectures to dental organizations worldwide. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a fellow of both the American and International Colleges of Dentists, a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a past president of the Edward H. Angle Orthodontic Society. Boyd has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, San Francisco – honoring the most outstanding teacher in the entire UCSF Medical Center campus – and the prestigious John Vallentine Mershon Award from the American Association of Orthodontists in 1999.

Boyd arrived at Pacific in 1996 to serve as chair for the department of orthodontics. Prior to his work at Pacific, Boyd worked at University of California, San Francisco, for 15 years, where he last served as a professor and chair of the division of orthodontics in the department of growth and development. He earned his doctor of dental surgery degree from Temple University, postgraduate certificates in periodontics and orthodontics from University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in education from University of Florida.
